Have you met Walle, the world’s ugliest dog? Well, you’d have a hard time believe that the boxer/beagle/basset hound mutt really is the world’s ugliest dog–until you realize that Walle is an official title holder courtesy of the annual competition at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in California. It’s a real upset, too, with last-minute entry Walle upsetting a tradition of World’s Ugliest Dogs with certain advantages–like, say, being part of a hairless breed. Walle mainly won courtesy of his amazingly weird muttly mingling. [all photos: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images]
We’re thinking that Walle also had an internet advantage. We’re seeing lots of memes in Walle’s future, since he has the derpiest face we’ve ever seen. For those who don’t know, “derp” is internet slang for when a photo catches a person or animal looking uniquely goofy. Walle has an inherently goofy (and lovable) face. In fact, a derp shot of Walle would probably have the little guy looking very handsome.
In any case, we offer our genuine congratulations to Walle, even though we suspect that some of the 30 dogs competing are probably complaining that he’s far short of a true standard of ugliness. To which we can only say, ugliness is in the eye of the beholder–and ugly can be pretty darn cute.
